That’s Joe Keithley, frontman of Vancouver punk legends, D.O.A. He’s showing off one of the songs he wrote for Hard Core Logo: Live, which will make its world debut on Nov. 18 at Theatre Network (Roxy Theatre) in Edmonton.
The musical, starring Michael Scholar Jr. and Clinton Carew, follows a fictional band of musicians who decide to reunite. It’s based on Michael Turner’s book, Hard Core Logo, which was turned into one of the most influential Canadian films of the ‘90s, directed by Bruce McDonald.
Keithley spent the week in Edmonton, helping the actors/musicians put the final touches on the songs, which range from ska to cow-punk. There’s even a rock ballad, but “not a soft-rock ballad,” he’s quick to point out.
To wrap up his week in town, Keithley will perform on Saturday, Oct. 30 at The Black Dog, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Read my interview with Keithley and Scholar Jr., who adapted the book and film for the stage, in the coming weeks in the Edmonton Journal.
